These traditional telephone boxes were saved for the city after a campaign by the Wizard of Christchurch and his followers. Following a highly successful publicity campaign (the Telephone Box War of 1988) Telecom were embarrassed into a climb-down and allowed a few of the boxes to escape repainting in an insipid pale blue and later replacement by hideous plastic modern versions.
